Database for Dummies please!

Database for Dummies please!

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a place where I can find straightforward, non-techie instructions for setting up a database on Moodle? Failing that, a crash course in programming language?

I get as far as creating fields, but when faced with setting templates I'm at a complete loss to understand the language. I've tried looking through the forums here, and it seems that everyone understands basic programming except me (sniff). Everything else on Moodle I've found to be extremely layperson friendly and very intuitive. Do databases and I have a future?? sad

Hello Pippa,

We are all learners here, so no worries wink. As to your issue, it all depends what you want to achieve (and which version of Moodle you use).

Easiest for us non-techies would be if a sizeable number of presets were available (which we could then modify to our needs).

Rgrds,
Paul.

Yes, yes, yes! I think you should go file that as a feature in the tracker and tell us so we can vote for it! My database templates so far are embarrassing. . .

Hi Pippa,

Database tool is not a programming utility at all. This is just an area that one can set up to her liking, in order to collect entries from participants.
I have tired to attach non-finished version of my database tutorial, which I use in training, but it is 500 kb. So please, visit this page to download it:
May be it will help.

I know that this is an old post - but thankyou Elena for the link to your Self Help Guide. It was really helpful.

I could not find easy to use info about customising the 'add entry' template anywhere else. The 'add template' tab name is confusing for users.

I love the self help guide by the way, it looks fantastic! What did you use to author it?

Thankyou.

Paul, atw, Elena and Ralf

Thank you for replying so soon! The instructions Elena sent are especially useful: I can actually see what the different sections of the template page refer to and come out like now. Highly recommended.

This is the first time I've posted a question to the Moodle community, and I had no idea I'd get such speedy help and support. It's lovely feeling so cared-for!!

Pippa,

Take a look at this video.

"A video for MOODLE Instructors. MOODLE's new Database activity provides a solid tool for collaboration and evaluation of images, documents and data. This short video provides a brief overview of this new activity. Setting up a database, adding fields and basic customization of the template are covered." Paul Treadwell

There are a lot of videos in his (Paul Treadwell) site.

Hope this help,

Thanks for this link, Adrian. The video was really useful, and the others on his site look well worth investigating too. Hooray for Paul Treadwell!
