A major obstacle I have ome across is finding an e-learning solution including LMS that works on a MAC platform, thus my question. Can moodle run on a MAC-based server for iMac classrooms? Any suggestions would be appreciated. My bald is increasing by the hour!

I use OS X with a mixture of clients running OS 9 , OS X and Windows. Ther server is running on OS X client, not server. I will be doing an install on an X Serv when I feel like beating myself silly. Maybe I will take out two birds with one moodle and move to 1.2 at the same time. Except I can't pick up a Moodle without getting a hernia.

Can you tell I'm doing mid-term exams today? Just remember there is no Mac (unless you call the windowing enviornment a Mac) to speak of anymore. The hardware is Apple. The OS is *nix. If you are still on OS 9, just bite the bullet. The advantages are legion.

You WILL have problems with the GD Library, so called for very good reasons. You can live without it. Otherwise the whole thing is a walk in the park. Drop me a line sometime if you have some specifie issues.

Hello Bob,

Thanks for you feedback. As of this past weekend,  I set up Moodle on my production workstation. So far, it works flawlessly. I will be attempting an OS installation later this week. However, I'm having a Windows 2003 server built for my business which will be used for educational projects as well. It will be interesting to see what happens when we test out this summer.

Hi Allen,

Great Idea !!! big grin

Being serious I think that everything should work without problems at all. I've been running Moodle under MacOS X in my iMac, eMac and one G4 DP at work (under 10.2 and 10.3) and it rocks smile. Running it under MacOS X Server shouldn't be a problem (although I haven't tested it).

The only thing to do is to replace the (poor) php module bundled with the OS with another distribution for Mac (see installation docs). Then GD and all the needed stuff will be there to execute Moodle lightspeed, really !!

Cheers smile

Hi Allen,

I have written some detailed notes about installing Moodle on an ordinary Mac using the ordinary OS X client version 10.3--not server version. The server version is expensive and not recommended unless you are running a Mac-equipped classroom laboratory. The notes are on this Moodle site at...
Documentation >> Apache, PHP, MySQL >> StepbystepInstructionsforMac >>>...

This is a wiki document, so I would invite all Mac server users to add their comments or corrections.

Other than these tips and warnings, I think Mac OS X is the easiest and most fun way to host Moodle of all operating systems smile Enjoy!

eMac Moodle Server for $950 + Step-by-Step Manual

Here is a step-by-step manual for installing Moodle onto Mac OS X (comments and corrections appreciated).

I just finished a successful install onto a 1ghz eMac with a 512MB memory upgrade. Total cost was USD950 (800 for eMac and 150 for memory). It took about 3 hours after the eMac was unpacked and connected to the internet. We will start with 300 students and then expand next semester to 1000 students in 20+ courses.
