Activity Module: Map

Type: Activity Module
Requires: Moodle 1.8 or later
Status: Contributed
Maintainer(s): Ted Bowman

This is a map activity module. It allows the creation of geographic maps to be used in courses. It can be used for student locations and/or other course content.

The module currently can create maps using two map providers. It can use Google Maps or a combination of Openstreetmap and OpenLayers. The map provider can either be chosen in the module settings page or for each map.

In order to use the Google Maps feature after installing this module the Google Map API Key will need to be set in the module settings page. If you don't have a Google Map Key then you can get on here.

The module has been tested with php5 on Moodle 1.8 and 1.9. Right not it will not work with php4.

I was looking for such module and have achieved the same goal by using Google Docs and its plugins but I'd love to have a proper Moodle module for this feature.

Unfortunately, trying to access a created "map" activity on my course displays the following error message:
"Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_VARIABLE in /myWebSite/mod/map/view.php on line 128"

For info, I'm running Moodle 1.9+ and the installation was successfull. The module has been set with the Google map key as described.

Thanks in advance for any input on this.

Hi Ted - nice module, thanks!

Would it be possible to add zip code/postcode to the criteria so that we can narrow down the location? At present it only seems to accept street address, town and country.

And would it be possible for the person adding a location to be able to "tweak it" manually by dragging the map icon to exactly the right place on the map before saving?? I want to add our training locations and the like - and some of those are just slightly off where the address or zip code/postcode says it is smile

Hi,
I am glad people are using this module. I just asked for a forum to be created for this module so hopefully we can move the discussion there soon.

For Stéphane's problem:
I have a Moodle 1.9.1 version I am testing on. I wasn't having the problem but then I switched to PHP 4 and I think that is it. Are you using PHP 4? I should be able to fix it for PHP 4 soon.

PHP 5 should work fine for now.

Thanks,

Ted

Jon,
I was thinking of adding some features similar to what you requested. Right now though I am going to focus on code bugs like Stéphane's. I think I should try to get the code as bug free as possible before I start adding more features.

For the future though I was thinking of adding the ability to add the actual longitude and latitude of a location. This would allow any point to be mapped. Especially I think it would be useful geographic locations such as mountain peak or a volcano.

I will let you know when I start on something like this.

Thanks,
Ted

Hi
adding the possibility to defining streets would be a great enhancement
