Legacy of the Moodle Users Association (MUA)

Evolving how users shape Moodle

The Moodle Users Association (MUA) was established in 2015 as a non-profit organisation to support the growth of the open source LMS, Moodle. Its mission was to provide a strong and united voice for users, offering direction and resources for new developments. Through a collaborative partnership with Moodle HQ, the MUA enabled members to propose, discuss, and vote on development projects, which were then funded and implemented in core Moodle. MUA Members subscriptions funded the development of the organisation’s projects by Moodle HQ.

In discussions between Moodle HQ and the MUA it was agreed that Moodle would create the Moodle LMS Product Advisory Group (PAG), which would more broadly represent the whole Moodle Community. The PAG aims to continue the collaborative efforts between the broader Moodle community and Moodle HQ and has taken over the role of gathering user feedback to inform the future development of Moodle. On this basis, the MUA membership voted in late 2024 to dissolve the MUA in consideration of involving a wider Moodle community.

Organisations and individuals can still contribute financially to Moodle’s development, through fund.moodle.org. You can choose to support an initiative that aligns with the requirements of your organisation, or make a general contribution. This can be a one-time contribution, or an ongoing recurring monthly or yearly contribution.

The MUA has left a legacy of fostering community and significant contributions to Moodle, which have benefited the wider education sphere. As the MUA concludes its journey, the transition to the PAG represents a new chapter in maintaining and enhancing user engagement in Moodle's development.

You can still contribute in these ways:

MUA Funded and developed projects

Since 2015, the Moodle Users Association funded 20 projects for Moodle core, contributing over 1 million Australian dollars. These have made a significant
contribution to the Moodle LMS core product and helped Moodle’s diverse community to better use Moodle’s many features. We would like to
celebrate these contributions and all the community members who helped make it happen. Read more about these projects below.
