I can see popping open the editor, even if you are the going to hand-type the TeX, just for the beenfit of the instant preview.

And, I think there is plenty of space in the dialogue to add an un-obtrusive checkbox in a way that won't traumantise non-extreme mathematicians.

Oh! perhaps we had a custom maths plugin for Atto.

Moodle is used in university maths departments, they know the difference, and our users are asking for this.

For anyone else, the choice can have a sensbile default, so it can mostly be ignored, and if anyone is curious, they can play with toggling the option, and immedately see the effect on the preview. There could also be a help icon if we wanted to explain.

What to people think? If the OU wanted to make a tracker issue to add this option to Moodle core, would it be a welcome addition?
