In Moodle 1.8 it appears that the view by 'separate groups' feature has been inexplicably dropped, or there is a bug.

In 1.6, assuming the teacher had divided enrolled students into groups, it was possible to select 'Separate groups' in: the Gradebook, Quiz results, Workshop, and Assignment to view the results or activity of students according to the groups to which they belonged. However, this does not appear to be possible in 1.8. Although, it is still possible with the Forums, Participants (the link in the People block) and Reports (the link in the Admin block).

I realize that the concept of Groups has changed a little in 1.8, but it seems to me that the inability to view separate groups in various activities and the gradebook is a big problem for people with large numbers of students in the same course, unless of course I am missing something in the way groups are are now set up in 1.8.

Having looked through the Moodle Tracker, it does appear that some other Moodle users have the same problem, e.g. MDL-9081. Do other users have the same problem with 1.8, and is anyone aware of a solution?

This bug / issue was observed in Moodle 1.8 downloaded on the 2nd April, 2007.

Hello Magnus,

Unfortunately, not even with the new version of Moodle (1.8) is it possible to have groups that are specific to just one activity. However, it may be possible in the future. The Moodle Roadmap, for Moodle 1.9 says:
  • New groups - Open University - Site-wide groups, reusable groups, and assigning activities to groups are the major improvements being developed
Also, have a look at the following moodle doc to understand how groups work in 1.6 , 1.7: http://docs.moodle.org/en/Groups

and now in 1.8: http://docs.moodle.org/en/How_groups_work_in_Moodle
