Okay, set debug to ALL and got this:

Warning: print_section_add_menus(/home/aiken/public_html/moodle/mod/book/lib.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/aiken/public_html/moodle/course/lib.php on line 1462

Fatal error: print_section_add_menus(): Failed opening required '/home/aiken/public_html/moodle/mod/book/lib.php' (include_path='.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php') in /home/aiken/public_html/moodle/course/lib.php on line 1462

I re-installed the book mod (can't live without that one), and now everything seems to be swell again. smile

Thanks very much for that tip. It is as I suspected...

Here's what freetranslation.com came up with, by the way:

Frequent problems met at the time of an updated

* More no user cannot connect itself: the authentication methods more are not authorized. It is necessary therefore to attain your basis of data, and modify in the table mdl_config, the line of which the field name is worth auth, to affect to the worth field the value email in order to authorize the connection of the accounts create by mall (the account administrator to priori), or manual if it was an account manual. The administrator will thus be able to connect itself and authorize the other authentication methods.
* Most of the users more cannot connect themselves: to see the paragraph Authentication multiple higher in this document.
* When I pass in method edition, a good party of the page is truncated: this problem is linked to remainders of units (or pad) third, that were not updated and or deinstalled. It will be necessary therefore be to update these units with a compatible version 1.8, or well completely to deinstall these units and them contained (you can try of simply to deactivate them to see if that rule the problem, since Administration> Modulate> Activities).

There is something to that, of course, and many will choose to upgrade very cautiously. That is probably the route of the wise (wo)man. It is what I would advise most people to do.

In our case, though, I am willing to get bopped on the head every once in a while, even if it hurts a bit. The new features are so delicious and tempting. Yum!!!

As far as roles go, I am going to figure them out. I have to admit that it has been slow going for me, but roles are something I definitely want for Aiken High School. And it is simply an integral part of Moodle that I want to learn, of course.

Oh well, in the end, I often fall back on whatever cliche suits me at the time. so I will do so here, too: We are going to go out on a limb, 'cause that's where the best fruit is.

Of course, we are just a high school with a few hundred students. I might see things much differently if I were charged with administering a large university system. I am sure that the risks of upgrading would loom very large, indeed, in that case.

Best regards,
Art
