You are right, of course. It is unlikely that anyone is going to give me a list of the students in the school in any usable format. We have over 1600 students and that's a lot of typing.

Just looking for an easy way out, I guess.

Yes, I may go that route. 

Still, I think it would be helpful to have the option of just clicking to create a zillion accounts. Seems not to be the general consesus, though.

Good news for you, I think.

By default, users can create their own accounts with no intervention from the site admin. They provide their own user names, passwords, etc., just as you did when you joined moodle.org

And there are options that allow one to charge on a per-course basis. (See screen capture below.)

BTW, I've put the skype button in 2 boxes, one with the 'real' button that detects if I'm online and one with a dummy 'I'm not online' button, I toggle their visability on and off this enables me to turn off the skype button if I'm online but I don't want any calls from students. I think this is OK ethically but its a fine line.
