Purchase a domain name like 123goobernoodles.com and let your students create email addresses like my-hovercraft-is-full-of-dancing-eels@123goobernoodles.com and do-you-have-my-stapler@123goobernoodles.com and avoid the whole problem?

Probably a stupid suggestion, I suppose, but that is pretty much what we have done.

It is sometimes quite useful to be able to look at the history of the wiki and see exactly who made exactly which contributions to a project. (Have to give credit to Lesli Smith for pointing this out to me some time ago.)
