Moodle in English -> Lounge -> A renewed flood of spam -> A renewed flood of spam

I think it is the missing Mary. I used to be a quick, albeit 100% carbonic, spam flagger. Then I myself got sanctioned by a manageress of manageresses and managers (obviously not Mary). Then I thought, such an omnipotent presence! Can do the cleaning herself.

P.S. I don't want to go back to the old topic. I was pre-emptively schooled that the moderator's decision is final. Don't want to get schooled twice!

P.P.S. I think, this topic belongs to Moodle community sites forum.

Australia’s Social Media Ban for Children Takes Effect

Australia bans social media for under-16s
BBC Podcast, 9 December 2025

In a world first, millions of Australian children and teenagers are prevented from accessing social media accounts. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told adolescents to make the most of the situation by taking up a new sport or reading a book, instead of scrolling on their phones. Under the legislation, companies could face heavy fines if they don't take reasonable steps to prevent under-16s from opening social media accounts. Social media firms have argued the ban would be ineffective, difficult to implement, and could isolate vulnerable teenagers.

Also: tens of thousands flee their homes in border areas of Cambodia and Thailand after a resumption of fighting. An investigation finds at least 1700 civilians have been killed in airstrikes by Sudan's armed forces since the start of the civil war.

SOLVED

Sorry, the Moodle forums don't have a "Solved" flag. One just puts the word SOLVED in the subject line and in the forum post, which I already did.

"It was solved by erasing everything and starting over. [..] I took Hamza's advice and got rid of Bitnami." is the solution. A wise decision, BTW.

Hi Matt

As I suspected the DI.DAY is European, mostly German-speaking. Was a huge success. Search the events - when I searched over the weekend, there were over 60+, Germany leading. I attended an on-line event, about Fediverse, there were 40 participants - and keen questions from absolute beginners. Reminding our discussion: Come and Join Mastodon.

True, regulatory organs should intervene. But who pushes them? Their constituents, I suppose. I know, the BIG TECH is more powerful than governments and as you mentioned, with their gazzilions of money, have infiltrated the governments. But I don't know why we stand, if there are no fights!

I find the infiltration of the minds (and the souls) of the youth finding entry through their smartphones the worst of all. I don't have to tell you that, you have been blogging, posting here and active in Mastodon. As the links you've provided, there the politics is giving up to the pressure from their education branches. Recently I saw numbers from a study in the US, where recruits (or were they university applicants) taking a standard math test which has been in place for decades. The scores took a nose-dive in the recent years! That is in math, what about their mental health!

Thanks for introducing Prof. Harald Wehnes. I did some reading. He had been putting pressure on German digital sovereignty for years. I think the awakening came after two mad men took control, on the US govn. and the other the biggest of the BIG TECH.

All that said, there's a petty problem that troubles me: Even in the DI.DAY event yesterday, somebody asked, "How do I escape Google?" They promised an event dedicated to that. I am struggling myself, with YouTube. I'm slowly finding out, the majority of the videos, technical and educational presentations, I look for are available in the "free" platforms, mainly PeerTube like https://peertube.heise.de/, https://media.ccc.de/ and many more. Still, most of them are also on YouTube and YouTube links get shared! I noticed the same about the podcast you linked earlier. What is the way out?

One thing I noticed in the DI.DAY events over the weekend, all on-line meetings were either Jitsi Meet or BBB. I propose, those who train the managers at Moodle HQ - don't know whom to talk, now Mary is retired - should take note, the HQ invitations were either Teams or Google Meet. I had to wrestle to switch to Zoom!
