Ahh ok - I assumed it would predate a bit for the alpha/beta.
Does anybody happen to know when the 4.4 branch is likely to appear in Git?

Do you just mean the word "Academy"?
You'll either need to use a theme that is more to your preference (more configurable) or kill it with some additional CSS. In Site administration > Appearance.

You should enable Debugging (right up to Developer) and wait for it to happen again. You should get a full trace of the error.
You might also want to to filter the task logs for failed tasks to see if anything looks like the problem.
