We are using Apache with php-fpm (and not experiencing this problem).

Without wishing to go off at a tangent, the mod-php/php-fpm argument is nowhere near as straightforward as that. php-fpm has a LOT more configuration for you to get wrong and, in may cases, may still not be the best choice.

I think your subject doesn't quite capture the issue. You CAN upgrade PHP - you are prevented from doing so because that bug is a show-stopper for you. You need that bug fixed. I can sympathise, but that's about all.

If as you say the bug is a serious problem for "thousands of users", I am having trouble understanding why only 4 people have voted for it in the tracker.
