I'm guessing that your debian update introduced a new PHP version that is incorrect for your Moodle version. 

Are all your plugins *definitely* compatible with the version of Moodle you are running?

First thing... have you checked your scheduled task page and the task logs to make sure nothing (relevant) is going wrong?

Do you mean that drag and drop doesn't work? Or the 'manual' file upload? Or both?

You might want to read - Activity_completion.

You can set that up to record an activity as "complete" on the basis that a student has opened it. That might be all you need.

You cannot tell if somebody has watched a video other than by asking them questions about it.

If you mean measure the elapsed time between them pressing start and stop then that's a different thing - but seems very pointless. And we get asked variations on this a LOT.
