Hi, this is sort of embarrassing...

I was able to do it on a testing site but I forgot how I did it. Basically I want to have "Settings" and "Navigation" blocks available ONLY to teachers and administrators, and NOT students. For this site there are only three simple SCORM courses so we really don't want the Settings and Navigation blocks show up to confuse students. How do I do that please? Thanks!

Hi, I have a quick question about MySQL collation.

My understanding is that Moodle 2.x would require MySQL to set collation to use utf8_unicode_ci and CHARACTER SET utf8. Here are my questions:

1. We are trying to upgrade a Moodle site from 1.9.8 to 2.4.7. The 1.9.8 MySQL database was set to use utf8_unicode_ci collation correctly. However, on the new server (we cloned the current site), if I go into Site Administration -> Server -> Environment -> "unicode"  it is showing Check (while on the current site it is showing OK). What could have go wrong when our system administrator "cloned" the site from the old server to a new server? If he did a mysql dump then restore it on the new database server, shouldn't it be automatically set the collation to ut8_unicode_ci?

2. It seems that my system administrator set the collation to be latin1 on the new server. Can I just change the collation through the operations tab in PhpMyAdmin UI after logging in to phpmyadmin and select the new database? According to this document (http://docs.moodle.org/24/en/Converting_your_MySQL_database_to_UTF8), it seems that it's easy to convert the collation for an empty database, but if the database already contain tables and has data in it, then I might have to go through some sort of "converting" process (see #4 "Converting a database containing tables")... is this true?

Thanks for your help.

Hi, I have a related question. I'm trying to upgrade a site from 1.9.9 to 1.9.19+, then upgrade to 2.2 then 2.4.

However, I think our system administrator made a mistake. When he copied the server database he might have set it up using latin1 instead of UTF-8. So when I'm trying to upgrade the site to 1.9.19+, I got the following error message:

My question is, can I move ahead to click on "Yes" to continue the upgrade process? If this site is very simple (only have 3 courses and doesn't involve any foreign languages..etc.), would I run into trouble later if I "continue" with the upgrade as it is and go all the way to Moodle 2.4.7 later? What potential problem or risk would I have if I just leave the database as the default latin1? Thanks!

Thanks for helping out my question in advance.

On our old 1.9 site we have 10+ 3rd party themes installed for our faculty to choose from (at their course level), and now in the Moodle 2.4 site we are limiting to only TWO themes. If a faculty used a theme that does not exist on the new 2.4 site, will he/she run into problem during the course restore process? If so, is there a work-around for this? If I force the original course (on 1.9) to use a standard theme, would this solve the problem? Thanks!

OK it's now almost year 2014 and I just found this thread when I'm trying to solve this problem to use "separate group" mode with Glossary.

We are running Moodle 2.4.6. Is there any most recent update on this topic about how to make "separate group" work with Glossary mode? We tried the "groupings" as mentioned in here, but (1) I can't find any site administration level settings when I do a keyword search with keyword "groupings" (only came up with "Version 1 import" which I don't even know what that is). So I'm assuming that the "groupings" should be enabled by default in Moodle 2.4.6. Now, if this is enabled, I wonder why there is no such setting at the Glossary level for me to choose "Groupings." I do have groupings set up at the course level, but couldn't find related setting in the Glossary level. Any idea? Thanks!
