error logs helped again... I noticed that for some (odd?) reason I had to set
var dsvglocation = "http://pathtomoodle/lib/editor/common/"; // path to d.svg (blank if same as ASCIIMathML.js loc)
It was blank but that did not work for IE with SVG viewer. One more reason for using php to set the location of d.svg
