Google Summer of Code 2008

Google is now accepting applications from open source projects who wish
to act as mentoring organizations for Google Summer of Code 2008. As said in the February 2008 Development meetin:

"We're going to apply to be included in GSOC 2008 next week. Assuming we're accepted, we need to come up with a list of suggested student projects ASAP, together with developers willing mentor them. Students will then browse the list of projects, discuss them in the student projects forum and apply by 31st March 2008"

So get together your ideas, describe them good enough and put them in Moodle Docs! 微笑

Hi David,

Thanks for posting about GSOC 2008. You've written almost exactly what I was going to write! wink

Please add suggestions for student projects here: http://docs.moodle.org/en/Student_projects

Note that each project needs a mentor. Thus, it's best if suggestions for student projects come from people willing to be mentors.

For further information on GSOC, see:

Is it feasible to ask this year's students to finish the work of last years students? It seems that only a couple of projects made it.

Hi Matt,

I'm not sure what you mean by "... only a couple of projects made it", as according to http://docs.moodle.org/en/GSOC/2007, nearly all the projects reached successful conclusions. It's not a requirement of the GSOC programme that the code is added to core - contrib code is fine too.

Regarding finishing the work of last years students, is there a particular project that you have in mind? As it's generally easier to start something new than to pick up where someone else has left off, I assume that such a project would be less attractive to GSOC student applicants.

I did mean "in core" and specifically in 1.9, but I see that you're right - I hadn't seen the 'results' sections on that page and just assumed that if they hadn't made 1.9, then they were not successful. Nice surprise to find they are on the way in 2.0!

Mine (Moodle Voice) reached a successful conclusion: The technology is not mature enough to be used right now!
