Does any-one know how the countries listed in the drop-down on user profiles got picked?
I've had a complaint (sigh) from one of our users that the list is a bit inconsistent with reference to the United Kingdom and its constituent parts!
So, the current list shows:
Ireland
United Kingdom
Wales
I'm assuming Ireland really means "republic of" rather than Northern Ireland (which forms part of the UK), so the real oddity is Wales.
its been suggested to me that the reference to Ireland should be clarified, and either Wales removed, or Northern Ireland and Scotland added.
What do people think? If the list has come from some formal source, I guess we might not be keen on fiddling with it?
Calling all Irish, Welsh, Scottish and English - what do you want to see?

Yorkshire

But if we can't have that then 'United Kingdom' and 'Republic of Ireland' should suffice, and would be correct.

United Kingdom - This includes Northern Ireland so there is no need for further clarification?
Ireland - Not in the UK as far as I'm aware.

But not England?

While we are on the (touchy) topic of countries and nations, I would like to see France:Metropolitan removed from that list, for the very good reason that it does not (or no longer) exists. Wikipedia article calls the expression "un abus de langage", and I fully agree.

The countries in that list all come from the 'countries.php' language file. You can tailor that file to suit anyone's tastes.

There's a task in tracker (MDL-13060) about getting the countries list sorted out & using the ISO list should deflect any possible arguments (discussions) about which countries should and shouldn't be included!

[Edit: just had message from the tracker to say this has now been fixed up!]
