Initial Start Up...Need advice

Initial Start Up...Need advice

I was hired recently to manage and support faculty use of Moodle at a small liberal arts college.  I am not an IT person by position or education.  I am a long-time WebCT user, course developer, and faculty mentor.

My current institution started using Moodle 1.6 about two years ago with no real IT support and with inconsistent faculty support.  We currently use version 1.6 to the best of our ability, but I do not yet have the IT support to upgrade or add modules.   From what I understand, our current IT department did not initially bring Moodle on board.  All of those who did are now gone.

I have faculty who are eager to use Moodle more fully and learn more about it.  I'm wondering how I should proceed.  Should I outsource our support until we have a good, solid working model in place?  I'm wondering how many of you do outsource and what your experiences have been that way.  Was it useful for getting things going initially?

Greetings, Jan!

If you have an IT department that is ready and willing to support you, that is one thing. But if your moodle instance is really being added on top of all their other responsibilities and they aren't exactly keen to take it on (at least immediately), you might do well to submit bids to Moodle partners or other hosting services in the US. Each one of them has a variety of packages, and surely one will fit your needs.

Partners also provide a variety of training events and support to get *you* up to speed, if you need that. I would also do a google search of Arizona and Moodle and see what comes up. There may be some additional resources very near to you. Hopefully, there will be some Moodle Moots in the southern US to attend as well. Since I am in Texas, I have my eye out for one of those as well!

Good luck!

Jan, you seem to be in the same situation as me! Almost exactly the same situation actually. that's scary. I'm hoping that moodle can do lots of the same sort of stuff as WebCT but since nobody at my work knows anything about it, i'm really on my own!

Trish, I sent you a private email response.  If you don't get that, send me an email at jkempster@prescott.edu

I bet we can help each other out.

Jan and Trish- I may be able to help (Jan, you should have gotten an email from me a few days back, but my reply here got mucked up). Email me at di@knedit.com or divonbriesen@gmail.com or di.vonbriesen@cpcc.edu. Lots to share.

Needless to say it's not ALL easy, but perhaps a lot easier than you might think. You can always benefit from a moodle partner as well, for a fraction of the cost of commercial BB (or other) hosting.
