We're currently using our site files and metacourses for file repositories, and for the most part, this is working. We have a number of different items held this way, from audio/videos/images, to Hot Potato files, to bits and pieces of courses.
The problem is this - it eats up hard drive space and is very difficult to search. I see the Repository API on the roadmap for 2.0, but I really need something sooner, so I've started looking at content management systems such as Alfresco, Knowledge Tree, etc, but what I'm finding doesn't quite fit my needs, so I thought I'd bring this up here and see if anyone else is looking into this. Here's a few of my needs:
1. Capable of assigning metadata/keywords and searching across the site, limited to what the user has access to.
2. A secure pass-through of some sort between the course and repository for the students - such as a password on the file that is then part of the URL, or only allowing it from certain courses. Students should never know this is coming from another system.
3. Content must be stored in the repository, not copied over into the course - that's what's causing much of my current problems!
4. Open source, with little or no programming needed to make it happen.
So, any ideas of what I could look at?
Thanks,
Matt
Hi Matt,
The File Cabinet, which is part of the SPDC "Moofolio" Portfolio system, fits all but (maybe) part of #2. Files can be given access on a course-by-course basis, though, so perhaps that fits your need.

Let me know if you have any trouble with it.

Thanks, Matt. I will get that on a test install and take a look at it today.

It was a pretty easy install, but I think I'm going to hit a roadblock on the implementation - a LOT of our videos are in .flv - it's nice and small and Moodle's multimedia plugin handles them really well. The only problem is that when I add the file to the course, it looks like I can't pull it into the course with the .flv as part of the link, which means it won't play through Moodle, but rather as a download on the user's system.
Is it possible to make a plugin that would display the file as a resource?
Thanks,
Matt

The SPDC system installs in three parts, BTW, and you don't have to go all the way to the portfolio system. You can install just access-control and the repository ("File Cabinet") if you want.

Thanks, Ralf. This sounds EXACTLY like what we're looking for, with a few things we didn't think of at all. I've sent you a message via Moodle and hope to hear more from you.
Thanks,
Matt
