Image editor as part of Moodle

Image editor as part of Moodle

I came across this rather wonderful AJAX/PHP image editor today. It can crop and resize on the fly, and acts as well as many desktop tools. I was wondering if anyone had mooted the possibility of integrating a simple image editor such as this into Moodle?

We often have teachers trying to upload large images to their Moodle courses and then getting frustrated that they are too large or not cropped correctly. Yes, we've taught them about editing their images before they are loaded, but that message doesn't always get though (you know how teachers are... wink)

I've opened this as a feature request in the tracker (MDL-10950).

Thanks. I really like it as a built-in image editor is part of the lovely CMS that I use to run our website. The editors who update the site can upload huge images and then shrink/crop them to the appropriate size, all without having to use desktop image manipulation tools.

A system like this would mean that our Moodlers could manipulate images wherever they are, without having to rely on external tools. It makes Moodle so much more self-contained. smile

I have tested http://www.phpletter.com/Demo/Ajax-File--Manager/ and it's a combination of filemanager/imagemanager/image editor and can be used as a plug-in of editors (TinyMCE or FCKEditor, maybe with htmlarea too) or stand-alone. Most settings and theme can be customized and together with TinyMCE also Safari and Opera are supported (no need for Webkit)

Simple (semi-automatic) resizing of the file to the specified pixel size and a crop tool would indeed be killer features for the editor!
