Excising clutter, simplifying

..ummm, I could have sworn there were discussions already in here...feel like I just rolled into a ghost town....maybe I am missing something...being the hillbilly I am...
...so a trick i just came up with, well, it may be a convoluted way of doing something that has been sussed out before.....

I hate the long list of resources and activities that can accumulate in each week/topic..clutter....so first is idea of placing all that stuff in one box, and then creating links to them in your week/topic boxes which are more visually pleasing, then doing the change in settings so that only the weeks/topic boxes show, not the big storehouse box...did I say i was a hillbilly...yes, I can barely function in html...but

I simplify my pages by laying out my whole course as above, then moving each topic/week box up, changing the settings so there is only box "1", view source of the page, copy the html, eliminate and edit in Dreamweaver, uploading the new html page, adding as resource, linking to that resource location in a"course menu" html box I created....it makes the first page simple, and the menu box stays the same on every page giving the illusion that only what is in the topic/weekly outline first two boxes changes...links all work, beautiful...

...most are probably saying, what has that yokel been smoking, but I will post the link to a screencast that follows the process and makes it clearer in the coming day or so...
for those who get it already, is anyone else doing this, or am I doing something in a convoluted way when a simpler method exists already?

A related question. I have about 20 resources/forums in the first block of my course page. I want them to still exist, but not clutter up that page. If I delete them, however, they disappear from my resources and forums pages. If I hide them, they are still there cluttering things up when I view the page as an instructor. Do I have to just erase and recreate these resources?

Ah, taking a tip from these forums I went to the "resources" page, saved it as html, then started deleting the links off the front page. I will then add the resources page as standalone html somewhere.

I think you may already realize this, but just in case....if you click on "hide" for any topic/week block, it makes anything in that block inactive.  If you delete your original resources in the week/topic blocks after "copying" the resource page, I am not sure you still will have access to those resources.

The key for me was creating the course, and then going back into settings and changing the number of weeks/topics to one, or 12, or whatever you still want students to see. they still exist and are accessible, and you can reveal them for further editing or adding of blocks at any time (up to 52 at a time).  I create resources, and then copy that link location and create a more visually pleasing topic/weel block with simple links, then change the view back to only one topic/week for my needs.  I created a somewhat blurry but understandable screencast which I posted the url to in other posts in this section to explain my approach.  It involves a lot of back and forth to set up all my pages but simplifies in a way that works for me.

If you are hip to this all already, I beg of your pardon.

Cheers

What I didn't make clear is that I am trying to hide the resources from myself, as well, so they don't show up in the individual weeks but are all safely tucked away on the resources page.

I'm actually going to delete the course and rebuild it per your instructions, as moodle doesn't allow one to select multiple files with a check box and move or delete them en masse.

It is the equivalent of rototilling your old lawn and reseeding, I suppose.

Ah, I figured out the drawbacks of "hiding" resources that you mention. Also, when you unhide a week's resources, each individual resource is also hidden.

I guess I will stick with the current method, as the students like to have an idea of what is coming down the road. If hiding and revealing resources requires too much tomfoolery, then one might as well code everything in html to begin with and avoid workarounds. I still think there could be a built-in method for having multiple links to resources/forums/assignments that doesn't involve workarounds.

This sounds like a variation on the discussion that can be found here. Very useful it is as well - especially with courses that have a lot of content.
