Hi Michael;
I had the same problem and found a cure by chance - one student saved his Word file as html and uploaded it.  This allowed me to view it onscreen.  It would have problems if there were embedded pictures I think but it works OK for text files.  I would hav e thought that powerpoint saved as html would create too many individual files, although it is possible to save a powerpoint as a single swf using OpenOffice.
