Document Managemet System debate

In a thread in the General Problems forum I was referred to a thread started by Martin Dougiamas, and later clarified by him as being about: "document management systems" and Moodle. He said:

"The idea is to have a system that provides a layer to handle all files in Moodle, whether they are in the database or on the actual file system, or even just links to external resources. Once such a thing existed all the rest of Moodle could be re-engineered to use it. I think this combination would be absolutely dynamite."

That was in 2003! The thread and discussion as I read it seemed to wandere and move in and out of technical exchanges for quite a while but I could find no ending to it.

Does anyone know what happened? Is the culmination of the idea now integrated in 1.8 ? Does it exist as an add-on/plug-in/extension/??

We are working on a repository implementation at the Open University that sounds like what you're after. Thanh Le is heading the project and has a post at http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=43689 . Our version is specific to the Documentum repository we are using. The general discussion for DMS is i believe now at http://moodle.org/mod/forum/view.php?f=352 as the intention is to have a general repository api with many drivers for various implementations.
