A Wish about blocks for next release.

A Wish about blocks for next release.

I've been trying to figure out a way to selectively include certain blocks on a resource page.  I tried checking the include blocks in Moodle 1.8 and then deleting and hiding those I didn't want, but when I did that, they were removed or hidden on the Front Page as well, which I don't want.  Therefore, below is my Wish for the next Moodle release, if not sooner.

I would like to see a way for any page in moodle, whether a resource or activity have a way of including blocs on an individual page and on an individual block for that page basis.  The blocks that could be added to any page should include all those available in the dropdown list box now, but also one for the Main Menu and for Categories as well as any others that are missing from the list.  These modules should be capable of being added, edited, moved, hidden and deleted on the page in question without affecting any block on any other page.

Sorry, but another wish is for someone to go through the standard style sheets (*.css) and write a short, but meaningful and explanatory comment on what a particular item does and where that item is located.  The Moodle documentation says the style sheets use plain English, but that doesn't do much because a person doesn't know what the style object name is referring to.  If we had comments throughout the sylesheets we would be better able to modify particular elements far more quickly than by a semi trial and error method.  Part of this wish is that any new themes be required to include such explanatory comments as those described above for any additional objects they add to the sheets.

Michael,

That's very nice.  I get the impression that it is an addition created by Intel.  It is publicly available or just used within the company?  What is it called and where can we download it?  Thanks.

Have you found the setting Admin -> Appearance -> Themes -> Theme settings -> Allow blocks on module pages? I typed that from memory, so I might be wrong, it is certainly one of the best hidden options out there.

Yes, I had found it.  But even when that option was checked a) there was no way to add blocks on the resource page in question without also editing the resource and checking "Show course blocks."  b) When "Show course blocks" was checked, attempting to hide or to delete them just from the resource page continues to still hide or remove those blocks entirely.  I want the capability of any page being able to include or not include any block without affecting what blocks are available on any other page.  I also want to be able to move any block to any column or position in a column on the page it is on without affecting the location of any block on any other page.  The link in Michael's reply shows the kind of thing I'm looking for.  Thanks.
