Peer Graded Assignment Module in CVS

Peer Graded Assignment Module in CVS

A new Moodle module has been added to CVS. It's based on the Assignment module with additional features such as a grading form, grading of the submissions by the students (either instead of or as well as the teacher), the teacher's grading of the student's comments and some statistical analysis in the calculation of the final grades. For a fuller description of the new module please have a look at the attached file.

Please note that it's only in the Moodle CVS. It does require the latest version of the datalib.php file to work. If you have a CVS version of Moodle then you'll only need to update the lang/en and mod directories (provided as I say you already got the current datalib.php file.

The status of this module is "under test" and it would really help if you are able to give a try and report back any problems, questions and suggestions. The only language at the moment is English (the module is certainly NOT yet stable enough to start the translation work).

There is a "TODO" file in the mod/pgassignment directory with some things already penciled in which will be added over the course of the next few months hopefully. Although I now think that the grading by students of pieces of work set up by the teacher is better handled by another module, probably called "Student graded assignment". This IS distinct from the current module, Peer graded assignment, in that the students here are grading other students' pieces of work which have been submitted "live" so to speak.

Please use this topic or email me direct with your feedback. The more testing the better!
Thanks

Although this module will not need anyone to sell it, I've had a chance to use it a little and I love what it does. With every assignment, the teacher creates a grading rubric which the teacher and the peer editors responds to in the grading cycle. The clear rubric, along with plentiful and varied feedback from peers and teachers, cranks up the whole assessment scenario a few notches. Try to do this WebCT & Blackboard!

One of the richest features of the module is the fact that the teacher can grade the quality of the peer edit (and then that number is also factored into the grade). I have 90 kids editing a vocab assignment right now--and by the time they've written their own work, and then edited some of their peers, they will have learned a great deal about the words. It brings back the idea that the only way to learn an idea is to teach it to someone else.

I think Ray's module is totally appropriate as (one of?) the first developer modules (read: not all Martin), because it plays to so many of the educational strategies that Martin has carefully built into Moodle.

Hurray, Ray. Thanks!

I just want to say congratulations to Ray for his fine work on this module - he's done a really great job. I'm looking forward to seeing this module being part of future releases.

If you aren't used to the idea of peer evaluation techniques then this module may seem a bit complex and daunting at first glance. However, I'd encourage you to persevere as it's really going to be a powerful teaching tool.

I'll add it to this server soon so people without CVS can play with it in Demonstration 103.
