You are right, of course. mod_php-crashes won't put the whole webserver down - it was a little drastic...
For me there were very bad experience with apache on small servers. I've often seen apache going down. And I've made even worse experience with the security of mod_php at our school. But the main reason could be that I couldn't get through the httpd.conf-monsters to configure it correctly.
Since I began to use lighty so much things have become easier for me - so my "use lighty-and-fastCGI-talk" is not that objective.
