Hi,

something that several teachers and students at our university has be asking for is a simple way for one-to-one communication, like the massaging system or the (now abandoned) dialogue forum. The problem with booth of them is that they don't support attachments.

It would be great (and perhaps not very diffifult to accomplish?) to have at fifth setting in the forums setup, for one-to-one teacher/student dialogue including attachments. This would be most useful for, for instance, thesis tutoring.

  • The student can start only one discussion.
  • The teachers can read and reply, but the fellow students can neither. They can see only their own discussion.
  • The student can reply on his/her own discussion.

The only way that I know of to accomplish this in Moodle right now is to have a group forum where each student is assigned to a separate group, but that's not very handy.

(It's just like the Each person posts one discussion-setting but without the fellow students getting access)

If you'd like to give it a try, we have an activity mod that does this. Called the My Journal mod, it is meant to be a reflective journal for a course. The current verison is for Moodle 1.7. If allowed, students can submit journal entries to the teacher (if not submitted, journal entries remain private). Journal entries can have attachments. And, if commenting is allowed, students and teachers can add running comments to entries (similar to dialogue). Email alerts for when a comment is added is also an option. Submitted entries can also be graded. Journal entries are searchable by date or keyword. Teachers can add journal questions (assignments) that can be answered. It can be downloaded here.
