Will moodle 1.8....?

Will moodle 1.8....?

Moodle 1.8 is being finalized (prior to beta testing) but I'm a little gun shy about upgrading from 1.7.1 to 1.8 after encountering a few issues with 1.7.

Will 1.8 address the following issues?
  1. Will course creators be removed from ALL course under them? Currently they become members off all courses below their level.
  2. Will course creators be removed from the list of "teachers" for any given course?
  3. Will teachers assigned at the site level be removed from ALL course unless they teach them? Currently teachers assigned at the site level are members of ALL courses and show up as teaching ALL courses.
  4. Will users be able to be assigned a "teacher" role at the site level to allow for main page editing, but NOT become members of all courses?
  5. Will it be possible to assign a user the role of "course creator" at the site level (like in previous versions) allowing them to create a course anywhere. Currently a user has be to assigned the role of creator in the specific category otherwise they become members of all courses. This also means they see all courses, even hidden ones.
  6. Will students be able to interact at the site level with surveys, polls etc. Currently a user has to be assigned the role of student at the site level and this forces them to become members of ALL courses.
Just looking for a little clarification and encouragement.

Hi Jeff,

As far as I know, from playing with 1.8 beta for a little while tongueout, the issues you mention have been addressed in 1.8.

Site administration in 1.8 includes a section for front page roles i.e. you can assign teachers here and they won't show up as teachers on all courses.

Also in site administration in 1.8 is the option to define course managers i.e. the roles which appear in the list of "teachers" for a particular course.

Hope you have chance to play with 1.8 beta too, prior to upgrading, ideally with a copy of your database, as the more testing it has, the better the final release will be.

Hello,

I am preparing a new Moodle install next week that wont go into full production for a couple months.  Should I install the 1.8 beta version and then upgrade that to the 1.8+ once avaliable, or should I install the 1.7.1+ then upgrade to 1.8+?

At first, I will just be configuring, creating training material, and working out policies, and it is ok if there are bugs for a few weeks prior to the upgrade to 1.8+.

Thanks,

It depends how comfortable you are applying the updates and using CVS. If you are just getting started and can live with some bugs then I salute the adventuresome spirit. My own personal bias would be to avoid some of the confusion of roles (especially regarding the main page) that was present in 1.7 and go with 1.8. If you are less comfortable dealing with bugs then perhaps 1.7 or even 1.6 might be better. It is really just a matter of your own comfort level and patience.

Thanks for the reply,

The reason that I am considering starting with 1.8 beta is because I see many posts listing issues with upgrading to newer versions that deal with users and roles differently between versions. I feel that every time that you upgrade, there are new features that might not work because the earlier version did not have an upgrade path to the new feature.

After doing a test install of 1.8 beta, I have noticed many changes along with some changes to rolls along with a new roll.

From what I have experienced with version 1.8, it seems pretty stable so far with a full release that is supposed to be release in the next week or two.
