I resolve

To participate and communicate more often with my fellow Moodlers.

To spread the word of Moodle far and wide.

To tell everyone how Moodle is bringing a diverse and worldwide group of individuals together in Peace through Education.

To find someone qualified to nominate Martin for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Of course, Martin has done great things, but if there were one person who I would like to see receive the Nobel Peace Prize, it would have to be Ansar Burney.

There are many deserving people who have done great things and continue against great odds.

My reasoning is that Education is the number one tool for building a peaceful future and communication and interaction among cultures is really just as important if not the same thing. Martin, is contributing on both fronts.

Moodle is enabling teachers everywhere to expand their students horizons. Their cost of entry is low, usually a small hosting fee, and many many are bypassing the status quo to bring their students a world of knowledge.

Secondly. The Moodle community is a rapidly growing, worldwide phenomenon that is bringing a world of people together who have the same goal. Education. It is also allowing teachers to share content and expose their students to other cultures.

Thirdly. Nobel nominations are primarily from academics. I can't nominate Martin but many of the collegiate crowd here know of or have access to those in the nomination loop.

Fourth, and not to be taken lightly, is the fact that a public nomination and publicity would go along way towards building the legitimacy of this Open Source project.

Surely there are academics among us who feel as I do and can get a groundswell going.

Nobel Peace Prize

by Frances Bell -
According to Wikipedia the Nobel peace prize should be awarded "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses"
That is a pretty tough call - even for Martin big grin
Perhaps we should be questioning the individualist stance of these terms of reference. UNICEF was a winner in the past but interestingly few women have won see http://news.independent.co.uk/world/politics/article295751.ece
Some of the more bizarre previous winners (e.g. Henry Kissinger) highlight the significance of 'solving' problems rather than avoiding them in a quiet group way. A cynical strategy for winning may be to help create a problem then solve it.
To answer your question Don, here are the categories of people eligible to nominate

OK. How about nominating Martin for the Nobel Prize in Economics as well. It certainly makes more economic sense to use Moodle than some/all of the commercial competitors!

Nominees (and those who nominate them) for the Nobel are to be kept secret for 50 years. This means that you cannot hope to turn the idea of nominating Martin for a Nobel into a Moodle publicity stunt as is being touted here without violating the rules and spirit of the Nobel prize. And since we know there is no way he could realistically win the Nobel prize for peace or economics, this whole idea is nothing more than a publicity stunt. Can't you guys come up with a realistic idea of something to nominate Martin or Moodle for?

Wouldn't something like this make more sense?

I've never really been able to get my head around the concept of the Nobel Peace Prize to be honest. Making a fortune from the manufacture and development of arms then using the money to set up a "prize" has always seemed a little bogus to me. Doubtless many will disagree.
