To Mr. Martin Dougiamas,

The main problem for science teacher is that moodle does not have equation editor on the interface menu, so is it possible for you to develop this features in moodle using WSWYG like mathtype. if you can solve this problem moodle it is very helpful for science teacher such as physics and mathematic.

Norfizin,

I would agree that a built-in WYSIWYG math editor would be great, but the lack of this built-in feature shouldn't stop us from putting math online.

If you have mathtype, you can create your math equations/expressions in mathtype and then copy them and paste them into the Moodle editor.

Hope this helps,

Scott

Sorry to come late to this discussion.

The lack of a built-in WYSIWYG equation editor hurts the student much more than the teacher. Teachers can write in LaTeX -- it's in their job description. Students should write math directly in the language of mathematics. That means they need a WYSIWYG editor. The lack of an integrated WYSIWYG equation editor in Moodle hurts students most.

The best workaround for students that I have found is TeXaide, the free version of MathType. It has the same (or similar) WYSIWYG interface as MathType. After the student has created the math expression, ctrl-C copies LaTeX to the clipboard, from which it can be pasted into any text area in Moodle (e.g., Essay question, online assignment).

When we require students to download and install a program like TeXaide in order to do their homework, we can expect problems. The ideal no-excuses workaround would be a Web-based WYSIWYG equation editor that (like TeXaide) outputs LaTeX to the clipboard. sMArTH promises to deliver this functionality and "almost works in Firefox."

Kristal,
you posted to a thread that has been inactive for some four years. Do you need assistance?

I agree with you as I have seen that most of the students do not bother to learn the syntax for TEX/Algebra filters for forum posts even after providing detailed glossary with examples.

I think feature request can be put up at http://tracker.moodle.org .

I have two other projects unfinished but I could try make a prototype of a new kind of an editor using same kind of a method as http://allayers.com/mycanvas/ (this is not working in IE7)

The basic idea is that text can be written normally but you can also select font, size, color and angle. Special symbols can be merged (drag and drop) as transparent images (gif or png) and everything is saved as one image. To edit this image you can open it, cover those things you want to change and write the new text.

To make it work inside moodle is an other project where I will need help from other moodlers. The prototype could be ready just after the new year.

I just noticed that this editor issue has been discussed in many other forums and there are many more capable programmers doing the same work I planned to do so I will slowly mature my ideas. It is not wise to start again same work that somebody is allready doing...
