Flash video and audio classroom

Hi,

I have been involved with developing a custom moodle installation for a client for about a year now. And I just thought it would be nice to show you the idea on how it works. I have to say that unfortunately this is a closed source project, of which I am very sorry, but that's out of my control.

This little video basically shows some of what it can do, although there are no students.
(This movie is a little rubbish, still getting used to iMovie)

Current features

Video and voice support on any machine which likes flash.
No silly networking options. (like having to open ports)
High contrast theme.
All classrooms are recorded and when the class has finished are served up YouTube style in a flash video with the text chat log showed below.

Tutors have extra features within the classroom. These include..
global bandwidth control
can enable/disable voice, video and text chat
can respond to a student putting their hand up.
can send text messages to individuals (eg “are you sure you are following me James?”)

Students
will work even if they don't have video or audio set up correctly
can put their hands up, meaning that the tutor can then pass control of the video/audio over to them. For example if they want to give an answer.

All this unfortunately requires Flash Media Server which is expensive/proprietary and the bandwidth costs will be much higher than a normal moodle install.

I should also like to point out that I, personally would love to get involved with a project which doesn't have the limitations of this propitiatory application and without having to have use Flash Media Server. So if anybody has started or is willing to have another moodler join the team a reply would be ace.

In regards to this application any feedback would be appreciated.

Regards,
Andy

Hi Andy,

I am looking for an audio-video component for a Moodle site we have just started working on.

I realsize that there's an open-source version of Flash MEdia Server called Red5 (http://osflash.org/red5) and there have ben rave reviews about it. Its being used as FMS replacement by quite a few projects already.

I myself am a C++/Java developer with basic Flash exposure.
If youre willing to guide on this project, I would be pretty excited to work on an open-source alternative of this component.

Let me know what your views are,
