I have spent two days working on importing 'Learnwise' courses into Moodle. The process I had decided upon was time-consuming, complicated and so, so long.

I posted a message in a form this one, and continued working.

Whilst following another thread, I came across the 'object' module. It will do everything I want - Thank you Helen (Alton College) and Team.

All I need to do now is to recover the two days I have just lost.

My important advice is

Remember to READ THE FORUMS and REMEMBER TO READ THE FORUMS........

Hi Ian,

Thanks for your comments.

For anyone starting with 1.6, please note that the IMS Content Package resource type is recommended, rather than the Object module. http://docs.moodle.org/en/IMS_content_package contains information on enabling the optional repository.

It illustrates that Moodle needs a helpdesk frontend for starters, maybe with a FAQ for starters to loevr teh question load (and Helen as backend 微笑 ?)

Hi Ian,

I'm interested on how you are going about this as LW exports as LRN, SCORM or LW native formats - are you going via a 3rd party IMS packager to sort the content out?
Also, when I tried importing LW content as SCORM, it indeed imports fine (without quizzes that need importing seperately - ta Helen!) but this leaves you with a self-contained package that is effectively uneditable in terms of adding other moodle features.
What are the results of importing as IMS - do you get a full  Moodle structured course that can then be further edited within moodle?

Two phrase spring to mind 'fools rush in..............' and 'hindsight is a precise science'. I was aware that Learnwise was capable of exporting files, but Learnwise was the 'property' of one person in college and as they are on leave, I, - the moodle administrator - could not be given the ability to access Learnwise in case I 'broke' it - although we would not be using it any more.

The existing NLN content however was 'helpfully' taken from the Learnwise server and loaded onto the Moodle server.

The operation succeeded in that I the files arrived safely but as i have now discovered (after three days work) the indexes and other references were 'shot' and although the files appeared to work they did not work for very long.

I am now attempting to obtain the original NLN files - and I spoke the a very nice man at NLN today who tells me that the files should soon be on DVD but he will see what other arrangements can be made.

So in answer to your question, the way they were imported did not give me anything useable.

Still things aren't all bad, I avioded the bad weather over the Bak Holiday and I learnt a great deal, and I'm not at all bitter..............................I'm not.

You did used to be able to download the NLN courses from their website (slow process if you want a lot, but leave it in the background to get on with it)

I'm still working on the little matter of potentially moving over about a 1000 Learnwise sites, some quite large, if we were to decide to adopt another VLE.
Short answer is there is no easy way.
The better answer though is that it would be an "opportunity" for the tutors to review and rebuild their sites to be a better learning experience for their students.

you can still download the files and i did try that but on the two occasions that i managed to complete a download one of 1105mb 5 hours and one of 450mb 2 hours both files were corrupt.

i contacted becta and (i didn't tell you this) the project manager advised me not to use the CAT system but to try an ExtensisA__ something download, the details are at work and I'm not.

i have a name and phone number and will find out details tomorrow and post here.

As to Learnwise moving, Learnwise produce a piece of software called coursebuilder for about £95 single user licence that will eport to moodle, its of no use to the college now but if you look at the web site you should find the details.
