That's useful indeed. I'm thinking of teaching gitweb how to identify a given file to a revision so we don't lose that (if we ever choose to go) with git.
So we can then tell users: upload the file _here_ and tell us what identifier the file is -- and that will tell us what commit it corresponds to.
