We're preparing to upgrade our site to 5.1 and exploring the new AI features and have a question about controlling the default course settings with regards to AI.

It seems that once you enable AI tools at the site-level, the default for all newly created courses is to have AI Tools "on" within course settings. Additionally, once AI tools is "on" at the course-level, all activities and resources created in the course have default settings "on" for all AI tools. This means that unless you change the settings when creating a quiz, for example, students will have access to AI generate text within their response field.

It would be much more ideal for our institution to have course and/or activity settings to default to AI tools being "off" while still being enabled at site-level to allow instructors the option of selectively including these tools rather than having to systematically exclude them. 

Is this possible to configure in settings?

Could not agree more !

There is IMO a need for a suitable default toggle on the Course default settings page : /admin/settings.php?section=coursesettings

It should appear (or be shown as "active") probably only after at least 1 provider has been added and the "Text editor placement" has been activated?

Hi Bethany,

Unfortunately it's not yet possible to set AI tool course and activity default settings. However, in the issue implementing course and activity access controls, MDL-85738, I notice it is mentioned that bulk actions will be added as a follow up, enabling AI tools to be turned off for example for all quizzes and assignments.

Hi Helen,

Thank you for your response and sharing that link. Bulk actions will certainly be helpful, but, as Przemek described above, a toggle for AI tools on the course default settings would be the easiest way to control where AI tools appear without removing them entirely or having to conscientiously turn them off. Most ideal would be if these features functioned the way activity completion settings do, with admins controlling defaults for both the course-level and per activity site-wide.

Hoping we get there eventually!
