I noticed that a lot of students rely on third party apps for interacting, collaborating and communicating in general, instead of using moodle's inbuilt messaging system.
By default it only has the most basic features, has anyone else had the same experience where users prefer other third party apps and if so, which?

Here on Moodle.org is the only place I have ever used it with any regularity. When I was still teaching, my students and I used the Dialogue plugin.
I don't know, whether one could call it an integration, maybe more a tight coupling - Moodle received some code related to Matrix. Could somebody update us?

My daughter was still in uni during Covid. Her and her friends would be on Teams or Zoom for their uni in the class but actually chatting on Discord at the same time. I've worked at multiple institutions and helped implement a bunch of others are students almost always will use anything other than what is provided by the uni by preference. Discorde, FB Messenger, Whats App, Google meets.

We (Adapta, Moodle Partner in Brasil) have many clients that use it, although it has several performance problems for users with many conversations (teachers, tutors etc).
We have developed the ability to add attachments to the messages that are rendered if they are images and displays a player for videos and audios.
