Hi Julie,

The Moodle App does work with Moodle 4.5. The issue is not directly related to the upgrade. New restrictions have been implemented gradually since January. Please visit the 'FAQ - Site not longer supported error when trying to connect to a site with the Moodle App' for more information.

Kind regards,

Isabel

I had a feeling that Moodle HQ was lining things up to stop offering the app for free to non-partner hosted Moodles, but I missed the memo that it was happening for Moodle 4.5

What is interesting, is this page https://docs.moodle.org/405/en/Moodle_app_plans seems to suggest different information to the FAQ page. Which adds to the confusion, as this was where I had been checking things.

I apologise for the error in the link provided earlier. This is the correct link: https://support.moodle.com/support/solutions/articles/80000985001-site-not-longer-supported-error-when-trying-to-connect-to-a-site-with-the-moodle-app

I have escalated this internally and we will be updating our FAQs soon.

Kind regards,

Isabel

Hi Isabel,

I stumbled upon this thread by chance and am somehow worried about the changes to the Moodle App plan changes which are foreshadowed here.
Up to now, the Moodle Mobile app was free to use even if you do not host with a Moodle partner or if you purchase a paid plan – with some important functional restrictions, of course, but it was still usable.

I just confirmed on a Moodle 4.5.3 site that this is still the case.
However, the report by Julie and the FAQ you are linking to implies that there are already cases when the free app is not allowed to communicate with Moodle anymore and the Moodle admin is urged to buy a paid plan.

Can you please clarify what the criteria for this communication blocking of the Moodle app are currently and what we have to expect for upcoming versions of the app or of Moodle core?

On a personal note, turning the Moodle app into a paid-only / Moodle partner-only service would be a severe impact on the Moodle ecosystem.

Thanks,
Alex

Hi Alexander,

Please let me clarify how this works.

Firstly, this is not new; it started around 5 years ago (see original announcement), but we have been enforcing it lately by adding additional providers.

It is affecting less than 1% of the Moodle sites using the Moodle mobile app, and we do not expect this percentage to change in the following years.

This is only affecting sites hosted by companies that specialise in Moodle LMS hosting, which are not Moodle Partners.

This is NOT affecting organisations using generic hosting providers, organisations using their own infrastructure or organisations that are hosting with companies that are not direct competitors of Moodle partners.

The overall goal of this initiative is to promote Moodle and Moodle Partners' hosting solutions to ensure the viability of the Moodle project. As you can imagine, it is becoming more and more expensive in all aspects to be competitive and maintain our very complex products.

Finally, this is quite difficult to communicate as we cannot directly mention all the non-official Moodle hosting providers affected by this by name. As I said before, we tried to contact all of them in advance (6 months) using their contact email addresses so they were aware and could plan to provide alternative solutions to their customers. They can build their own version of the Moodle app using their own means or purchase Premium plans on behalf of their clients as well.

Regards, Juan

Thank you very much, Juan, for your clarifications.

As you referenced it, I could remember this announcement from 5 years ago now.

And based on the information you have given now, I understand the approach and especially the differentiation between self-hosted sites and sites by non-official service providers.
I was mainly worried that there would be a plan for an overall blocking of the free Mobile app.

Cheers,
Alex
