Clarification on AICC functionality in Moodle

Clarification on AICC functionality in Moodle

Hi there

My organisation creates AICC content using an elearning authoring tool. This AICC content is hosted on our LMS and third party LMS systems can access the content via a AICC URL that our LMS generates. We whitelist the organisations that can access the AICC content.

We are looking at Moodle as an alternative solution for hosting our AICC content and allowing third party LMS systems to access the content that is hosted on our Moodle instance.

Can someone clarify if this is functionality Moodle offers.

I am aware I can access the AICC content from our LMS on Moodle either entering the AICC URL into Moodle when creating a SCORM course or uploading an AU file.

Any clarification would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Paul

Hi Paul,

Moodle itself can't operate as an AICC "Server" - only a client.

But.... If the external LMS systems support LTI, you can integrate your Moodle site with those external systems.

If LTI doesn't work for you - we do have a plugin we wrote recently here at Catalyst called "scormremote" which might meet your needs:
https://moodle.org/plugins/mod_scormremote

I don't think we've tested it with AICC packages but it might get you pretty close to what you need.

Hi Dan

Thank you for the super fast response.

Your clarification is really helpful as is your kink to the scormremote which we will definitely investigate.

Many thanks

I have already used the recommended plugins (remote scorm) and would like to share that, unfortunately, they have issues that at the time prevented me from using them.

I had also tried using mod_subcourse and tool_objectfs, which also face similar problems.

The tests revealed that these plugins are not working as expected and have a significant number of unresolved issues, as indicated by the numerous open issues on GitHub for quite some time.

Therefore, before considering integrating these plugins into a production environment, I recommend exercising caution and conducting a thorough evaluation in a test environment.

Thanks Greg - I agree it's very important to test all plugins before you use them!

all 3 plugins you mentioned are being used in production sites, but I can't see any specific questions or reports from you elsewhere about the issues you've had using any of those plugins yourself - if you are still having issues (and are still interested in using the plugins) feel free to create a post here in the forums that cover the issues you are having and you might get feedback here on how to resolve the issues you are having.

Keep in mind it's best to have distinct conversations/threads related to each plugin - rather than bundling all the issues into one thread.

Hello, Paul! 😄

I'm happy to see that you're considering Moodle as a solution to host and share your AICC content! I believe you'll be surprised by the possibilities this amazing platform offers! Let’s dive into the details to help you get what you need:

In Moodle, it is indeed possible to host your AICC content and allow other LMS systems to access it via URL, similar to what you’re currently doing with your LMS.

First, you’ll need to enable the functionality for external packages in Moodle. To do this:

  • Access the Moodle administration panel.
  • Go to Site Administration >> Plugins >> SCORM package.
  • In the Admin settings block, you’ll find an option to enable the checkbox Enable external package type. Check this option to allow external SCORM packages.

After enabling this feature, you can create a SCORM course in Moodle, and when adding the package, you’ll have the option to change the SCORM package type to External SCORM manifest.

  • Simply enter the URL of your AICC content and configure the update frequency according to your needs.

Additionally, you can use services like OttFlix, which help store and manage SCORMs and AICC content, making access control and sharing with third parties even more efficient.

Thank you Eduardo for your suggestion. I do not think this is a solution for the functionality I require but possibly and hopefully I am wrong. The External SCORM manifest appears to be a solution for me to host my elearning courses outside of Moodle and allow the learners on my Moodle instance to access the courses. However what I require is that my AICC courses are hosted on my Moodle instance and learners on other systems can access my AICC content from their LMS systems. Please clarify if you think your solution will offer a solution to my requirements.
