Stack not supported by local Moodle house

I just got a message from a local Moodle house that they will not be running a Maxima server and hence cannot support Stack.

Have any of you experienced the same?

Is it difficult to run a Maxima server together with Moodle? Is it less secure?

What could possibly be valid reasons for this decision? (Incompetence? or real complexity issues?)

Kind regards,

Michael

I am not sure that 'difficult' is the right word. But, there is this requirement which means that starting to use STACK is not just another plugin to install. There is some extra specialist effort required, and if you have never done it before, you need to work out what is required which is even more effort.

So, for a company whose business is set up to offer standard Moodle hosting, it is a perfectly reasonable response.

There are companies who will host STACK for you, but they are probably offering a more sophisticated service - with will therefore have a price tag to match.

And, if you want to set up Maxima, the eaiest way to do it these days is this containerised solution: https://github.com/mathinstitut/goemaxima

In my opinion you make it sound "difficult" to offer maxima/stack ;o)

Maxima is "just" a calculator which you need to interface with, how difficult can that be for a professional?
Maxima is great, don't get me wrong, but it also has a simple interface. Input = script, process = do the math, output = answer. Input and answer are ascii code in maxima-language.

Even the simplest things can be made complicated (and thereby expensive).

Thanks for pointing me to goemaxima! It looks interesting.

I may end up rolling my own docker solution if my local house will not adapt. Stack is so cool that it is becoming a "must have" ...
