A Comparison of Canvas and Moodle Discussion Tools

I began this video as a reply to a colleague, and as I continued, I decided to make a “presentation” about some of the differences between Canvas and Moodle discussion boards.  I decided to post it in this general "advocacy" topic for feedback.

I didn’t know how long my video would be.  It ended up a little longer than I desired, around 30 minutes instead of 25 minutes.

I would appreciate anyone’s thoughts about two issues: 1) Are there any “technical” errors in what I say?  2) What do you think could be removed, or added?  Someday I would like to improve this video and give it as a presentation at a conference.

Hi Rick. I am currently half way through watching your video and I say please please make some more comparison videos about Moodle v Canvas because it is SO useful to find out how they compare and work from someone who uses them regularly. Thankyou! (Going back to watch the other half now)

Thanks for your suggestion, Mary. It's appreciated. It is fine that you are only halfway through, too. Yep, one of my longest videos. But I needed to say a lot.

Yes, I would love to make more of these videos about features, such as: grade book, assignments, quizzes (and quiz engine), community forums, tracking student progress, the editor, analytics, administration, and groups (to name a few.) Some people have the idea that all LMSs are equal. Occasionally, I get a student who says "I wish the instructor used Canvas," but they don't understand that some of the things that I do in my Moodle-based course, which they like, cannot be done in other LMSs.

Rick,
I've listened to the entire presentation and I fully concur with Mary. You've created a very valuable teaching guide, especially for those teachers who are able to use Moodle.

If you are on the Canvas Community website, I have made a post to this topic, https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Discussions-Announcements/Hello-and-happy-Friday/m-p/523788/highlight/true#M390, and provided my video for Canvas folks to see. I was interested in anyone finding ways around the Canvas issues that I describe. One person described a method to get the Permalink to a Canvas post, but it is a bit involved and no one would ever do it. However, it is a solution that works.

My post in Canvas was to the a new Product Manager at Instructure, who is working on Discussions within the Canvas LMS. Essentially, folks agreed with what I had presented. Nothing has happened, but I did give it my best.

Thanks Rick.. cheers! Deep discussion is imperative in some areas, and you just point out how far Canvas has to go. Thank you.

I forget if anyone can join the "Canvas Community," but if you can, you might want to check out this discussion at "Hello and happy Friday!!".  It began back in May 2022, and the last post on that topic was June 2022, then it died. From what I can see, nothing on the Canvas LMS has happened.
