Hi

Mnet was slated for deprecation a long time ago but still exists in 3.9

Can I have any indication as to whether Mnet will exist in Moodle 4.x ?

I'm not involved in the planning for 4.0, but I haven't seen anything that suggests that MNet will be removed.

Prior to it being removed, I'd expect to see further work to replace it and/or create a mechanism to transfer MNet users to some other system, as discussed in this post, and MDL-40905.

MNet has been abandoned, it is no longer supported and users are discouraged to set up new solutions based on it. But I don't think we are under pressure to actually remove it from core and break existing installations. Especially as there is no 1:1 replacement as Dave correctly points out.

Hi David,
Do you have any update on this? My instution plans to "connect" 2 Moodle sites by using MNet. Is it still not recommended to use MNet or do you have any suggestion about the best method that we can use to connect 2 Moodle sites so user from Site A can go seamlessly to Site B classes without re-login and the grades can also be transferred back to site A?

Thanks!

I've got it working in v4 on some installations. However, given your comments above what's another way you suggest of getting users of Moodle A to enrol on Moodle B? This is a useful service for some people so it's disappointing that it's not more supported by Moodle HQ. sad

Another way is LTI enrollment, but in my case I use MNet eventually, with the consequence that we might have to change it later on if MNet is not supported anymore.

We've got it working now and it's very useful if you want to connect sub-organisations together.

I tried LTI but it doesn't achieve what you can do with MNET which panders more towards the sense of belonging to a particular unit within a larger organisation but still respecting the structure of that organisation (in human terms). It's also a great way of sharing courses or content and keeping it on one instance rather than having to backup & restore the courses between instances.

Given this I can't understand why Moodle HQ would want to drop it.

It might be worth starting a campaign in the Moodle community to "Save MNET" !
