Search engine

Hi all

I've noticed a few posts re issues with searching and as I just stumbled onto Webglimpse I thought I'd mention it here in case it may be of use.

Looks like it could be a very good search engine and as of 1 Feb this year, the commercial version would appear to be free for education/non-profit.

Not being a coder/developer I have no idea whether it would be of value or not but thought some of the developers could have a quick look.

Harry,

The problem with search engines isn't so much the technology — since there exists a number of very good engines that could be used — but more a problem of permissions. The engine you use for a moodle search must be intimately aware of which resources can be viewed (and therefore searched for) by a given person, and doing this effectively is the crux of the matter.

Hi Dewet

Thought that might be a problem e.g. Joe Bloggs only being able to search for text in courses he is enrolled in.

As mentioned, I don't really have a clue about coding matters but as Webglimpse hasn't been mentioned on Moodle before, thought I'd throw it in for consideration. Was actually trying to find something to search my server to find various file types so I can delete them (have noticed a few native Flash files and the like which shouldn't be there; just wasting server space)

Thanks for the explanation, confirmed what  I thought the issue was.
