Language choice before login

Is there a way of offering a language choice to new viewers who have not yet signed up?

I know that once you sign-up you can select a language of your preference.
Other than that you are at the mercy of the single language that the site operator has elected. Am I right?

We are working on a pan-European project. The end-users will be individuals (administrators and entreprenteurs) and therefore may come from a number of different countries.
The courses will be offered in two languages (both different to the native laguage). No foreign language skills are expected in the first instance, and it would be good if the sign-up language could be selected.

Perhaps a series of flags enabling temporary switching, maybe also linked to a cookie?

Aye, aye.

I think this is a good idea. Why should users have the choice of language only after login? For some, registering without switching to their native language can be difficult. Plus, there are some parts of the moodle site which do not belong to any course.

I also have another idea related to languages - I think it would be useful if the course administrator or teacher could enforce the use of a particular language in a course. In language-teaching courses (particularly at higher levels) the teacher might want to prevent students from running moodle in their native language.

Therefore a question to you, Martin. I know you've got a lot of work to do at the moment, but are these two (language selection before login and pre-determined course language) somewhere on your to-do list?

Cheers,

Przemek

Great idea however, might not be practical, we would need a new login screen that would be so generic that almost anyone could understand what was required to log into our system.

But I like the idea biggrin.gif

Flags yes, new login screen with flags, saying something like Moodle your Internation gateway to Education. Now I am babling, someome stop me! tongueout.gif

You can check (and add to) the list yourself! સ્મીત

I'd like to see both of these implemented (as long as they're optional, since I assume 99% of sites will just be running in one language).

As for flags, I guess so. Personally I'm not a big fan of clicking on a US or UK flag to speak English (I'm Australian આંખ મારો )

Well since there are already US English and British English, Brazilian Portuguese and possibly European Portuguese language files, why not an Australian English language file ! this way your

flag can float as well instead of the Union Jack (though if I remember well the Union Jack is still floating in one of the cornetrs of your australian flag. I already saw CMS that use a flag for Canadian French and European French (same for Chinese).

The problem with that is somebody coming out from Mexico could just say i want a Mexican Spanish language file instead of the European Spanisgh language file.

A solution to all this might be just to label languages by their names to avoid sensitive problems like those as one of the big assets of Mooodle is you can modify the language file so easily
