My students are having fun this week learning to use dfwiki and prefer to use the HTML editor. However, when they try to insert an image, there is no browse or upload available for them like there is for the teacher. I do have things set for them to be able to edit, attach, and upload. Is there anything elese that I may have missed?

If we make pages using dfwiki editor they have browse and upload buttons and can use them.

My students had the same problem. For your student's insert window students must have their pictures somewhere on the net first, then they can insert images in wiki.

I realized that Firefox 1.5 does not support student's upload prosedure, older Firefox works, the new one doesn't.

We found out that only pictures with height less than 5 cm (reso 72 ppi) come out. If the picture is too high, internal-window with picture address will appear blank.

Re: HTML Editor Insert Image upload problem in dfwiki

โดย Kristin Darken -
We love dfwiki but are faced with a bit of a challenge in getting the full benefit of using wikis in our curriculum because the dfwiki editor is a bit intimidating for our students. We think in order to get the most out of them we might have to use the html editor instead but wonder about a couple of things:

1. Stability? We found in ewiki that the html editor could sometimes produce html code that gets convoluted and can causes problems in the view mode of the wiki. We found this also to be true in dfwiki when using the html editor .... perhaps this is an intrinsic problem in all wiki software (and that is why the standard editors in lots of wiki software are fairly simple ...) I would be interested in hearing some experts provide some feedback on this theory.

2. Students uploading images? Is this possible to insert an image if a student has an image on their computer - or is it only possible to upload an image into dfwiki when using the html editor if the image is on the web?

3. Other attachments added to dfwiki through html editor? Can you "attach" other documents to a page of a wiki in dfwiki when using the html editor on a page (like you can using the dfwiki editor)?

Our students have also been having problems uploading pictures to the wiki. The upload option appears on screen and the pupils follow this but no picture appears on their wiki. Any one able to help?

I think it is the same problem I documented at:
http://docs.moodle.org/en/Wiki_requirements

The wiki does not recognise links inserted by moodle editor.
You have to:
- upload the file
- click on it in the upload box to see its link
- copy the link
- paste the full URL link into the image code

Similarly, if you want an external link to work inside a wiki, you need to use the wiki link tool to find the URL BUT then paste the URL inside square brackets instead of using the wiki editor link tool.

Wiki is fantastic, but buggy.

I tried the above procedure again but found the following:

if the image has high resoloution or large file size it will not upload but if it's a small size file e.g one that is on a web it will upload....!

Any one else find this? is there any way around this problem?

p.s. as I am new to this could someone explain the difference between ewiki and dfwiki

Tom,
as you know I have been working on this problem.
This, for the benefit of every one else, is a list of key facts for students uploading pictures.

1) it accepts .jpg, .gif and .png file formats
2) max file size is about 65KB
3) Picture resolution / size does not appear to be a factor
4) use lowercase filenames
5) avoid spaces in filenames
6) if several students using different wikis want to upload the same picture they must make sure each occurance of the picture has a different file name.
7) It works with Internet Explorer 5.5 or greater and firefox 1.0.7. Not certain about later versions of firefox (sorry)
8) If you run Windows XP there is a useful 'powertoy' you can download which makes it easy to shrink .jpg files.
Download here: http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/ImageResizerPowertoySetup.exe

Has anyone else found anything which affects students uploading pictures?

Regards,

Nigel

Hello Al,

We are students in the Netherlands, and we must work with wiki. ON the account of my teacher we are allowed to ask this question:

We have the same problem as you discribed. Do you have found the solution yet? Could you replay? Please it's urgent.

Hi,
When the wiki is created, the allow binary files option must be set to 'yes'.

The filename you want to upload must be in lower case letters AND the file extension must be in lower case letters (.jpg NOT .JPG)
Warning: MS Paint creates file extensions with upper case letters

You must allow popup windows in your browser

I have attached my training notes for you....

Nigel

Re: HTML Editor Insert Image upload problem

I have binary files set to 'yes'. I haven't tested to see if this allows uploads for students yet.

What doesn't work for me:

1.) Image tags entered via the editor, or via manual HTML have the 'src' attribute filtered out. So no image appears. (It does appear in the editor though.)

2.) I can upload the image as a teacher. Entering that image link into the browser shows the image. But if I create a link (<a href="whatever">) for the students to use rather than display the image in-line, the 'href' attribute is filtered out.

I'd love to know a solution.

Hi Paul,

Have you seen Nigel Metcalfe's solution on this page. He supplies a tutorial as an attachment, and it worked perfectly for me.

I suspect the tutorial solution will only work for one image , if your students attach a second image, the first attachment may be deleted. (the upload is in the moddata folder

ps this forum itself limits my ability to upload images, and I've looked at the source code, so its not down to the browser). -- think we might have to wait for the code release mentioned below

Thanks for this advice, it works! Can I please ask, where are the images stored? (internal://) /How can the images be deleted?/ How does moodle link to the images?

We are having the same problem described in the very first post in this thread. Even when binary images are allowed, students see the smaller insert image window that doesn't allow them to upload an image. In addition, trying to attach the image and then use internal:// syntax also fails. Elsewhere in Moodle, they can upload and select images just fine. This is too bad, as wiki is one of the most useful recent additions to Moodle.

I'm experiencing a similar problem. Students do not see the file browser when the select insert image in the HTML editor. This behavior occurs in both the wiki and the forum activities. If I allow the student global role to manage files within a course, the file browser shows up. So, my question is: there has to be a way to give students upload capability in the forum and wikis, without also giving them the ability to delete files from the course file directory.

Re: HTML Editor Insert Image upload problem

Ok, so Matt's tutorial
is helpful, however, when I click the upload button, the response page is blank - no link to copy. Also, I tried using the attachment tab in the wiki instead, but when I click the upload button, the message back is " We are sorry, but something went wrong during the file upload." Yet the attachment function works in the forum. So I'm wondering if there is a permissions problem. I'm running Moodle on a windows 2003 server with IIS. The students can upload their profile pictures, and attachments in the forum activity, but in the wiki activity, neither the upload image process as described in the above tutorial, nor the attachment tab function work. Even as the teacher, the two functions fail.

Thanks for any light on this!

Hi John,

Can't take the credit for the tutorial, it was the work of Nigel Metcalfe.

I double checked my own installation, 1.8.2, and it works for images. Are you sure you have pop-ups enabled? If you are using Firefox, the page with the shortcut code can open in a new tab, depending on your settings. Also, make sure the filesize was not too big - keep it under 60kb, I believe.

However, when I tried to upload an attachment, the wiki refused, and I got uplrejsect and 'no files uploaded yet'. I tried this as a student and as the site administrator, and in IE as well as FIrefox. No joy in either. Also tried it with a variety of (small) filetypes. No joy with any.

Initially, Firefox was giving me 5 javascript errors (??) related to mod/wiki/view.php on line 2. I have been trying to replicate the upload and re-generate the warnings so I can investigate further, but Firefox still will not upload, and has stopped displaying the errors.

Like you, I have no problem uploading files elsewhere on the site (outside wiki)

Edit: Did a search for 'uplrejsect' on the moodle.org homepage, and it appears this is a bug that has been reopened. Maybe go vote on it.

Matt

Hi all,

has there been any progress on this issue? My students are having the same problem uploading to a Wiki - nothing gets uploaded and they get a message saying " We are sorry, but something went wrong during the file upload." The Wiki is configured to allow uploading binary files, and the students are only trying to upload small files (<20K). File uploading works fine elsewhere in Moodle.

Hi
We are using Moodles 1.8.1 and 1.8.3 and we have exactly the same issue as outlined in the posting that started this thread in 2006.
The students appear to have a cut down of the image insert screen.
We got by before because no one was using the wikis, but now they are and my students cannot upload any images, only administrators get the full feature. The more it doesn't work the more turned off they become.
Even tutors get the cut down but they can at least up load tto the files section first and then copy and paste the url into the box in the image pop up of the wiki editing tool. Students can't do that so I'm hopeful someone can suggest soemthing - anything !
Thanks

In your setup of the Wiki you have to allow binary files which will allow you to add images.

Re: HTML Editor Insert Image upload problem

โดย Ravi Alamuri -

Hello,

I am with the Liverpool Hope University . One of the course leaders uses Wiki's to run her course and she contacted me saying it was extremely important that the students be able to upload images into the wikis. We are currently usking OUWikis and the above mentioned problem seems to be plauging us all.

The problem with us was that the students were about to turn their assignments in, and it was at the very last moment that the course leader realized that they couldnt upload images. She contacted us immediately but we had no more than a day to fix this. So we came up with this solution:

We customized the code so that the student were allowed to upload images from their computer to a local folder within the htdocs folder and then automatically insert the image link in the textbox for the image url, then the student can proceed with the normal process of aligning the image etc, and go about his normal work.

Screentshot : http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/7265/image1ut5.jpg

Screenshot2: http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/4624/image2rn6.jpg

Screenshot 1 shows the Upload image popup box for students. When the browse button is click they will be shown a browse dialog to select the files on their computer. Once they select a file the local file path will be populated in the box. They then click on the upload button which uploads the picture on a folder on the webserver. The image name is hashed along with the time ( (md5(time() . $file_uploaded) . $file_ext). This makes sure that any file that is uploaded is given a unique name.  The file upload is done in a different windows (form submit points to -> upload_image.php). Once the image has been uploaded, the new windows inserts the image path into the child window's text box (javascript opener.document.form.f1.f_url.value = http://moodle.university.com/uploaded_images/hashed_value.jpg ). Once that is done, the new window closes itself, the student will barely notice a new window opening, however in IE, it does ask the student confirmation to allow the window to close itself. Once the window closes, the Image URL box is populated with the new image url, as seen in Screenshot2.

The student then adjusts the image borders and spacing and clicks on OK button. Thats it. The image is inserted as usual.

Its not the most elegant solution but it seems to get the job done for the moment and it doesnt display the entire course folder to the student preventing them from modifying or deleting any of the course files. Because the images are stored within the htdocs folder, they are backed up along with the rest of the moodledata.

I am waiting for official permission to post the code online for everyone to see but meanwhile I wouldnt mind helping people in this regard. Feel free to message me.

Regards

Ciph

Hello,

I am sorry. I did recieve your message but I am having a hard time at work replying back since our new students have just started registering on our systems and we needed to setup all new courses and then import the student in. We developed a new interface between moodle and our student management system SITS. Its a bit of a mess at the moment and that's why its taken me a while to reply back.

Its been a while since I posted that solution here. What exactly are you trying to achieve? I might be able to customize the code to your requirements and send it across?

Once again my sincerest apologies for the delay in replying back.

Hi there Ravi,

Sounds like you've got a challenge on your hands there. We run eSIS as our student management system and haven't yet tackled Moodle integration...

We're just having issues with students being able to easily upload and insert images into wikis. We'd like them to be able to upload images just as teachers do (by clicking the 'Insert Image' icon and then browsing for their image and uploading it. I got the impression that this is what you achieved above.

Do you have an alternative suggestion?
