Theme Suggestion

Hi, we've been using the Essential Theme since Moodle 2.0. As you know, the development of the essential theme has stopped at Moodle 3.6. Now, we wanted to upgrade to Moodle 3.8, do you suggest any good and updated alternatives to the essential theme?

I've checked the Foundation Theme, and it's not what we need.

Thank you.

Suggest moderator move this thread to the themes forum where theme experts 'hang out'.

Also, another suggestion, as a theme developer would/should ask ... 'not what we need' ... what does your site need?  Like Essential isn't a good answer cause that had over 600 settings!   Try to be specific. smile

Per Ken's comment...
You've said Foundation isn't what you need, but what is? What are your requirements?

There are a lot of excellent themes in the plugins database, some have feature cross over (ie. some of the same/similar features), all have unique points.
It may be worth setting up a test system (you should probably have one anyway if you are upgrading and changing theme), and download a shortlist to test...
Fordson, Adaptabe, (Foundation but you've already said no to that) and Moove are all really good themes and all support 3.8 and are actively developed, so likely to continue to evolve when you update further in the future.

If none of them suit you entirely, then try to create a 'shopping list' of what you do and don't like in each one and probably someone would be able to pull those features together into a single theme for you.

Thank you, Richard, for all the suggestions. I'll check these themes out.

Regarding the Foundation theme, it feels basic compared to the Essential theme. there are no clear segments for blocks and menus, also the front page soldiers don't work as expected (in full width), I mainly played with the main setting of the theme and didn't see an option to make the slides full width or have more defined sections. Also, the read more option for the main news forum is not there.

I like the cleanliness and responsiveness of the Foundation theme, however, the following points were missing or (I didn't know how to configure)

1- The front page sliders are not in full width.
2- There's no read more for the main Site news (the entire thread is displayed on the page).
3- There's no option to set a background for the site (there's one for the login screen). I think this is doable via SCSS, but I'm wondering if there's a direct way through the settings.
4- Is there a way to have the navigation section to the left instead of the right? (not a big deal)

This is our current customization with the Essential theme: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/16muc5Z3q-iiQAyr8ZfnnzKGMtkGVuX_h?usp=sharing

best would be, looking at what others are installing, in that case head to plug-ins stats and start from the top

https://moodle.org/plugins/stats.php

There are 7 themes listed

hell of a testing to do!

also, please wait to get replies - do not start posting same question at different places.
