Moodle Vocabulary Module - Can't contact developer
Group Particularly helpful Moodlers

Hello

I found an existing vocabulary module at the following Finish University URL.http://users.utu.fi/mianku/ol2005/files.html

I can't seem to find a valid Email for the developer though. The code doesn't seem to support "sesskey" security though and gives an error when trying to start a new activity.

Anyone interested in looking at the code and trying to track down the developer?

Regards

Alan Hess / Switzerland

I suspect this is a student project, perhaps abandonned, in an IT department of a university. I doubt the programmer would want to continue it, but if you wanted to champion it, and become the "customer", there are many IT departments looking for new projects to start, or old projects like this to revive.

On second thought, Matthew Whelpton, of the COVCELL project said they may begin such a project this year.  They will need users like us to advise on functionality, user testing, interface design, etc.  You may want to contact him, or simply subscribe yourself to the COVCELL forums here on Moodle Lang to wait for the latest announcements.

Greetings everyone!

I just wanted to confirm that at our recent partner meeting, the COVCELL partners agreed that they would definitely program a "personal glossary and quizzer" along the lines suggested by Don for his constructivist quizzer (a learner dictionary where students would "collect" words and phrases in the process of doing a task-based lesson (project) - this dictionary would also serve as a self-quizzer to remember and apply these words - teachers could monitor the learners' efforts in the activity reports.)

We will be releasing a detailed description of our programming aims at the beginning of March but as this seems to currently be a hot topic I thought I would let you all know about this  wink  As Don says, we will be keen to receive input on "functionality, user testing, interface design".

Further details will be released in the COVCELL forum in due course!

All the best,
Matthew.

There are quite a few personal glossary makers - not Moodle based - already available. One of the best (free) packages of this sort that I have seen is Interlex by Andrew Quilley:

Gerry's Vocab teacher  isn't free but it allows export to Hot potatoes match and quiz formats and comes with ready made examples from the Academic Word List. The link with Hot pot already makes it partly moodle-compatible.

Yes, this does appear to be a student's project - probably a computer science student's project. I had a look at the Web page and found the following links and texts. Lingo2005 is not a project that I've heard of, but maybe one of the Finnish reps on the EUROCALL Executive Committee knows about it. I've been involved in projects in Finland based at the University of Jyväskylä and the University of Tampere, both of which I have visited several times. Lingo2005 is new to me.

You'll find the contact details of the Finnish EUROCALL reps on this page:

Web pages at the University of Tampere:

Operation Lingo2005" is a codename of the software project. This software project is outcome of the "Project courses 2004-2005" currently taught at University of Tampere.
The software developed during this project will be used by the "Language Center" of the University of Tampere. Contact person from the "Language Center" is Mirja Hautala for this project.

I've since mailed a few people in the hope of getting some more info.  With my limited PHP knowledge, I've confirmed that the problem is the lack of "sesskey" passing between forms and although the module was apparently tested in the field and reported on, it must have been with an earlier version of moodle.

A full technical documentation is available at the following addresses, in case anyone with better PHP skills is interested.

Hi everyone,

I'm presently (among other things) developing a Moodle-based block which will manage vocabulary for language learning students. It should be ready within the next few months, as our teachers would like to start using it on the next academical year.

It is very tweaked for the way our teachers wanted it to be, and is still suffering some bugs (most due to my inexperience of PHP and Moodle dev), but if any of you are interested in it, I'll create an instance of it in a publicly available course.

Hi Nicholas,
Yes, please show us your vocabulary module. And tell more of what it is intended to do. Our school is looking for something that allows students to collect words and phrases and quiz them on their collections.
Cheers,
Don

Maybe the flashcard module could serve as a basis for vocabulary learning. I asked about that somehwere else in the forum: http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=90180 and Valery Fremaux seems to be intested in adapting that module to the Leitner system. - Sounds like good news.

Just another idea: maybe it could be a good idea to modify the quiz module in a way that it supports Leitner system rather than the flashcard module.

For a description of this system see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flashcard -- it should be the basis of any vocabulary trainer.
