Mary, you have probably already tried this, but on the iPad, in Settings / General / Accessibility, there are some Zoom options for magnifying portions of the screen.
Under a different Accessibility setting, you can make text larger, bolder, increase contrast, and reduce transparency -- all of which make text easier to see.
In case you have not tried these on the iPad, do take a look. Most of these visual aids seem to be somewhat awkward to use, but they can help.
