Customising the front page

Customising the front page

Hi all,

First of all - Moodle's great! I'm doing a 3rd year computer science project for the Department of Computer Science, University of Warwick... and Moodle's made something great out of all of this!!!

However, in order to make it exactly what we need, I will need to be doing some coding - and hence this post!

Basically, on the front page (after a user has logged in!) we need to display all the new news items for that user (that they are members of - courses, etc).  All the different resources will have a different icon, but they are simply a chronicle listing of these new items.  I don't think it exists yet (except as a block) - has anyone looked at anything like this?  If not, should I be re-using the "recent added blocks"  code (within reason) to make this new custom front page?

And lastly, would anyone else be interested?!

Sure there will be interest!  In fact, I have seen other posts recently desiring something quite similar.  I expect that any type of "portal" function would be valuable--some kind of "course at a glance" with news items/announcements, calendar events, and upcoming events would be helpful.  When you see that kind of information upon login, you can plan for your activities better.

Is this what people mean when they talk about the "my moodle" page?  You might do some searching on that term and see what other ideas turn up.

Good luck on your project!

Have you checked Moodle ver 1.6 as yet ? I havent but i think there will be an option called My Moodle which would allow soemthing similar to what you're planning.  I suggest you find out about that first...

Good luck anyways !

are u looking for something like this. i hope 1.6 will have such a feature, because i'm a bit tired of having to hack the codes myself. basically i use BB in the university where i'm doing a part-time masters, and i like the front page format of BB, so i hacked into index.php and changed some codes to the news format. i'm very hesitant about posting the codes here, cos i'm quite confused myself as to what i've changed .... very disorganised.

Hi, thanks for your replies:

Basically, we want to produce something similar to

http://paulstacey.thebigboards.net/

(This is a project run in conjunction with my own, in order to redesign the front page).

I chose Moodle after realising it was simply the best option to follow smile

which is exactly what my codes do. it adds a middle block summarising all "new" news since the user's last login, and separates the news into 2 sections, one for courses where the user is enrolled as student, and one for enrolment as teacher. if u want i can email u the files i modified, but no guarantee that things will work ...
