Im looking to travel to China and be able to do some class marking/correcting while I am there. Does anyone have experience with any problems I may encounter? Will a VPN fix those problems? Any help here would be great!
A VPN would get you through any firewall and give the advantage of accessing some of the useful blocked sites. A VPN is also useful for a traveler by encrypting communications - useful if you are accessing public wifi and logging on to banks and email.
If you are spending any time in China, a local SIM is a good idea. Prices are low, and you avoid data roaming charges but every hotel and even cheap restaurants now have free wifi.
I think Apple has removed VPN apps from its China store and the Google Play Store can also be blocked . A VPN can be installed in China but may be more tricky than doing it before traveling.
Hey thanks so much James.
I used that site you suggested and it says my moodle site should be allowed!
I've read that ExpressVPN is like 12.95/month, so that sounds like the way to go. I'll definitely purchase it before I leave. Any suggestions on SIM cards? I probably have to wait and get it there hey.
That is a reasonable price for regaining access for google, Gmail and social media even without worrying about your sire access. I use ExpressVPN myself and always get through. They also allow 3 connections so you can get 2 phones and a laptop hooked up at once.
You want a SIM card for data access and many places sell them. Best to take a friend who speaks the language and your passport - you will need to show who you are. Very handy if your phone is unlocked and has 2 SIM slots.
Also definitely install Google Translate as it will be very useful. English is not common on the street.
Thanks for the info. My sister is living in China, so I can make her do all the leg work! I got her to log into my Moodle account there using her Express VPN and everything worked fine. I made a couple tests quizzes and assignments for her to correct and she had no problems at all!
