Push notifications no longer working on iOS (but is working on Android)

Hi --

Push notifications have been working fine since we upgraded to Moodle 3.2 in July. We are using the Moodle-provided Airnotifier service. But we've noticed recently that at some point within the past few weeks, we stopped receiving push notifications on iOS devices. But Android devices are receiving push notifications.

Relating my experience, I have an iPhone 7+ and an iPad Air 2, both running iOS 11 and Moodle Mobile 3.3.2. It isn't receiving push notifications from our Moodle 3.2 site (note that they are receiving push notifications from moodle.org). A colleague's iPhone 6s, running iOS 10, has also stopped receiving push notifications. I have an Nexus 7 (running Android 6.0.1 and Moodle Mobile 3.3.2), and it continues to receive push notifications from our Moodle 3.2 site.

So from our Moodle 3.2 site, my Android device is receiving push notifications, but my iOS devices are not (and they used to).

On my iPhone, I tried deleting and reinstalling the Moodle Mobile app and reconnecting it to my Moodle site. That didn't help.

Has this been seen before? Does anyone have any advice on how we can correct this?

Thanks very much.... Brian

We've confirmed this problem on multiple devices.... Moodle Mobile app push notifications from our Moodle 3.2 site are coming to Android devices but not to iOS devices. We are using the Moodle-provided Airnotifer service.

Would requesting another access key work? Given the "black-box" nature of this service, I'm not sure what else to try.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.... Brian

It would be good to know who else is experiencing this, as we have exactly the same issue with our site - notifications were ok until a few weeks ago, now no push notifications on iOS (Android fine).

I have tried a new Airnotifier key, but no difference.

As you say, it is a bit of a 'black box' - not sure if it is a bug, or an issue with the Airnotifier service.

Echoing the request - any help would be appreciated!

(Our site is on Moodle 3.3.1)

I can also report that I’m no longer receiving push notifications from my subscribed Moodle.org forums to either my iPhone or iPad Air 2 (both running iOS 11). My Nexus 7 tablet running Android 7 continues to receive push notifications from these Moodle.org forums.

As for our Moodle 3.2.5 site, requesting a new Airnotifier did not fix this on-going push-notifications-to-iOS problem.

Thanks ... Brian

Just going to bump this topic - it's a source of immense frustration to us, as we heavily rely on the mobile app for communication with our students.

It would be good if the devs/moderators could throw some light on this for us please?

I tested push notifications to iOS today (11/30/17, 4:45pm, PST), and it appears to be working again. I'm now receiving push notifications on my iPhone 7+ (iOS 11). I had a colleague test this, too, and she also is now receiving push notifications on her iPhone again. I'm not sure what changed -- nothing has changed on my end (same phone, same iOS version, same Moodle Mobile app version -- 3.3.2). We did update our Moodle site to 3.2.6+ (from 3.2.5+) yesterday (11/29), but the push notification issue was still present after the update. Maybe today's release of Moodle Mobile 3.4 had something to do with it. I am glad that it's working again. I just wish it wasn't so seemingly magical.

Hope this helps.... Brian

Coincidentally (or not!), notifications began working again on iOS for us today as well. Still on 3.3.2 for the app, and we had done no site upgrades.

So strange how it stopped and then started again, just as randomly (and it appears a global phenomena), yet the silence surrounding this is somewhat deafening!

Hi,

there have been some changes in the overall Moodle infrastructure so maybe there were blocking ports (firewall/proxy or whatever), in any case, we'll be investigating this during next week.

Hi,

I'm just confirming here that Push notifications are working on both Android and iOS.

We have tested it thoroughly and we can confirm that:

  • Notifications are properly received in iOS 10 and iOS 11
  • Notifications also work on Android 5, 6 and 7

If notifications are not working for you, please review the Troubleshooting section in this link:

https://docs.moodle.org/34/en/Mobile_app_notifications#Troubleshooting

Regards, Juan

Dear Juan,

I already follow this steps https://docs.moodle.org/34/en/Mobile_app_notifications#Troubleshooting but i still cannot receive forum notification on my mobile phone. I only can received message notification. I'm using official moodle mobile.

Hi,

then it means that there is something wrong with you installation of you the cron tasks is handled (forum notifications work because I was precisely testing them again yesterday).

I'd suggest you contact a Moodle partner.

When i run the cron job for forum mailings it show cannot obtain task lock

Execute scheduled task: Forum mailings and maintenance jobs (mod_forum\task\cron_task)

Cannot obtain task lock.

How do we release the task lock.  I read https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=274692 they said just reboot the server.
