SSD as Cache vs Stand Alone

SSD as Cache vs Stand Alone

Hi i will build a custom server to handle 2000 students.

i already have 250gbx2 HDD in raid1 and 1 128 gb ssd.

I was planning to use the SSD as a main drive and the raid array for system backup.

But as i learn about SSD Caching, i've noticed the speed is on par with stand alone.

So now i have 2 options :
1. Stand alone SSD with raid backup
2. Main raid drive + ssd cache.

What is the most optimal and secure?
Will the system still running when the ssd cache died (for the lower durability).

The moodle system will be heavy with lessons and quiz.

+1 vote for option 2.

Is this your server where you are responsible for all aspects of keeping it running? You should probably consider having a backup to an offsite as well as keep a local backup. Nothing more embarrassing then not being able to recover a system after a catastrophic failure.

Yes i have full control.

SSD is very fast but unpredictable. I lost a drive last year, died out of the blue without any warning.
Raid SSD still too expensive for the project.

I will have offsite backup to S3 drive every weekend.

For this build i will use centos 7 with virtualmin.
